Plaquenil Hydroxychloroquine is used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus & others. The alternative to Plaquenil is a slightly different anti malarial called Quinacrine. Plaquenil replaced Quinacrine formerly called Atabrine for anti malarial prophylaxis so now the Quinacrine has to be made up into pills or gel capsules by a compounding pharmacy. If you google you will find details of compounding pharmacies. Hydroxychloroquine generally does not have significant interactions with other medications, but care should be taken if combined with medication altering liver function as well as aurothioglucose Solganal, cimetidine Tagamet or digoxin Lanoxin.

Apr 02, 2010 there are several drugs now that you can take instead of the plaquenil. these type of drugs they have now work in a different way then the methotrexate and plaquenil. most of these drugs you will still take the methotrexate. i researched these drugs before i made my decision and so for myself i started on the enbril and boy what a difference. I have taken Plaquinel/hydroxychloroquine at a low dose as maintenance for my SLE for over 20 years. No side effects. No problems. Until I went on Medicare and they don't want to pay for it. They want me to try cheaper alternatives before they will pay for hydroxychloroquine. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil, chloroquine Aralen, and quinacrine Atabrine are medications that were originally used to prevent or treat malaria. However, during World War II it was also found that these medications were effective in treating the symptoms of lupus.

Rapid Heartbeat with Plaquenil - Lupus - MedHelp I've been on Plaquenil since being diagnosed with lupus in 2004. The last couple of months I've noticed my heart rate has been quite high, like up to 120 bpm. My general practitioner told me that my heart rate's been high for a while, between 90 and 110 I do need to ask her if this has always been the case or if it's happened just since being.
