    How long before plaquenil works

Plaquenil is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia.

According to the American College of Rheumatology, hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil, is a “disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD,” meaning that it helps reduce the pain and swelling that come with arthritis. It can also reduce the incidence of joint damage, thus lessening the risk of developing a long-term disability from. It may take up to six months before the full benefits of Plaquenil are realized. Dosage The usual starting dose of Plaquenil is 200 mg twice a day or 400 mg once a day, administered orally, in people weighing 80 kg or more. Oct 12, 2009 As I thought about it, I realized that many other small activities that had hurt before were no longer so painful. I had that same experience of having to stop taking it for a while, and the joint aches returned very quickly. The fatigue is better on the Plaquenil, but it doesn't take much for me to overdo it. I really have to pace myself.

Plaquenil is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. This medicine is not effective against all strains of malaria.

  5. Mar 07, 2012 I want to believe in my doctor but I don't feel like either one of them bothered to really look into my concern. I think I will just stop the plaquenil and see if I get any relief and I will let him know what I have decided. I am wondering how long it might take for the drug to leave my system so I can see if this is the problem.

Hi Guys, I haven't been here for a while - just checked in and found this question on Plaquenil - for me it took approx nine weeks to begin to work - I'm only taking 200mg per day so far - it seemed to stop working a few weeks later - most days are pretty good I s'pose but I drop nearly every afternoon. Hello kelpie21, It can be a hard road, can't it? Hydroxychloroquine does take a while to take effect. Arthritis UK gives a figure of around 12 weeks, whilst the American College of Rheumatology says, "symptoms can start to improve after 1-2 months, but it may take up to 6 months before the full benefits are felt". Hi. I have been taking Plaquenil since July 9, 2006 6 weeks and I do not notice results so far. For those of you who have taken it, how long does it take to work and how will I know it's starting to work?
