    Plaquenil side effects eyes

Chloroquine is now uncommonly used in favor of its derivative hydroxychloroquine. In the United States, hydroxychloroquine is most often used for its anti-inflammatory effects in rheumatology and dermatology.

Plaquenil is usually used for long term disease control, rather than in the short term to control active bursts of inflammation. Plaquenil has important but uncommon side effects that may affect your eye. How does Plaquenil affect your eyes? Hydroxychloroquine is a well-tolerated medication for various rheumatologic and dermatologic conditions. Its main side effects are gastrointestinal upset, skin rash, headache, and ocular toxicity1. Within the eye, hydroxychloroquine can adversely impact the cornea, ciliary body, and retina1 The side effect that is of greatest concern is retinal toxicity. Retinal toxicity of Plaquenil may manifest itself with subtle disturbances of the retinal pigment epithelium which may eventually lead to complete destruction of the macula in the form of bull’s-eye maculopathy.

While early toxicity may be asymtomatic, patients with more advanced stage of toxicity may complain of color vision changes or paracentral scotomas. Its toxic effects on the retina are seen in the macula.

Hydroxychloroquine typically is very well tolerated. Serious side effects are rare. The most common side effects are nausea and diarrhea, which often improve with time. Less common side effects include rash, changes in skin pigment such as darkening or dark spots, hair changes, and muscle weakness. Improved vision screening tests and updated dosing guidelines are key to avoiding such complications.

Hair loss and Plaquenil? DailyStrength Plaquenil is supposed to help with hair loss, not contribute to it. I would also suggest giving it some more time especially since the side effects of plaquenil are supposed to lessen after a few months of use.

Plaquenil causing mood changes and depression? Jan 12, 2014 I have been on plaquenil since October of 2013. I started on 50 mg to avoid side effects then upped to 100 and finally to 150. I did experience the GI side effects but they have mostly passed. I do have horrible constipation though and I am not sure if this is due to the plaquenil or to the disease itself. All I know is its a new symptom for me.
