Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia. Plaquenil is also used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. Hydroxychloroquine is a DMARD. The brand name is Plaquenil. What does Plaquenil do? Plaquenil relieves pain and swelling and prevents damage to joints. How long does Plaquenil take to work? Plaquenil works very slowly. In 1 to 3 months you should start to feel better. You may continue to get better for up to 1 year. Jun 09, 2006 Despite improved medical therapy, many RA patients still require orthopedic surgery, most frequently total joint arthroplasty. These surgical techniques have also improved, with infectious complications seen in primary arthroplasty dropping from over 10% to 20% in the earliest series to the current rates of 1% 1.
