Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention. Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking hydroxychloroquine: Incidence not known Some side effects of hydroxychloroquine may occur that usually do not need medical attention.

I would suggest you contact your Rheumy and let them know. Although the plaquenil is a good drug, it has a very long half life 6 weeks. It will take a long time to leave the body. If you are allergic and I cannot say whether you are or not, only your Rheumy can then there is an alternative called Quinacrine US or mepacrine UK. Before using Plaquenil, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have psoriasis, porphyria, liver disease, alcoholism, or glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase G-6-PD deficiency. Take Plaquenil for the full prescribed length of time for malaria. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. And now I'm allergic to Plaquenil, which is actually fine by me because my psoriasis, which is normally very well controlled, erupted a few days before the hives and swelling started. The Plaquenil and sulfasalazine allergies manifested exactly the same way, though the sulfa reaction was a bit more severe.

Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine.

Feb 17, 2009 I just wanted to let you know that I am highly allergic to sulfa drugs and have been on plaquenil for almost 8 years with no problems at all. I did accidentally take a sulfa drug about 5 years ago and still had the horrible reaction so know I'm still allergic even while being on plaquenil. Nov 09, 2018 Hydroxychloroquine is used to treat or prevent malaria, a disease caused by parasites that enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America. I was even thinking of trying it again to see if the rash was just a one-off thing, but after doing some research I found a study about patients' allergic reactions to Plaquenil and the pictures looked exactly like my rash. Also read that allergic reactions can get even worse when triggered again, so I won't be trying anymore.
