    Chloroquine history

Parasites that cause malaria typically enter the body through the bite of a mosquito. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia.

Chloroquine’s fame is as an antimalarial drug, and the history of antimalarials starts of course with quinine at right. Hans Andersag first synthesized Resochin, later called chloroquine, at the Bayer Company in Eberfeld, Germany in 1934. The synthesis resulted from the structural analysis of the quinine molecule and the localization of the antimalarial activity at the level of the oxyquinolinebenzene nucleus 9. It was initially rejected as being too toxic. Chloroquine should be used with caution in patients with cardiac disease, a history of ventricular arrhythmias, uncorrected hypokalemia and/or hypomagnesemia, or bradycardia 50 bpm, and during concomitant administration with QT interval prolonging agents due to potential for QT interval prolongation see WARNINGS, PRECAUTIONS, Drug Interactions, ADVERSE REACTIONS and OVERDOSAGE

Chloroquine is also used to treat amebiasis (infection caused by amoebae). Chloroquine is used to treat and to prevent malaria.
