    How does hydroxychloroquine help sjogren's

Keep in mind that most people with Sjogren's stay healthy and don't have serious problems. You should be able to keep doing all the things you love to do without making many changes.

Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is considered a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug DMARD. It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis. It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria. Here's what I found It is not clear why hydroxychloroquine is effective at treating autoimmune diseases. It is believed that hydroxychloroquine interferes with communication of cells in the immune system. Hydroxychloroquine generally is given to adults in doses of 200 mg or 400 mg per day. There are other treatments for some of the less common symptoms of Sjogren's syndrome. For instance, if you get yeast infections in your mouth, your doctor might prescribe anti-fungal medicine. If you get heartburn, your doctor may give you medicines that curb the amount of acid in your stomach.

Conditions like this are called autoimmune diseases. Sjogren's causes your immune system to go haywire and attack healthy cells instead of invading bacteria or viruses.

Although there are few reports that describe the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine for skin disease in Sjögren syndrome, hydroxychloroquine is widely used in the treatment of autoimmune skin diseases such as cutaneous lupus erythematosus. Hydroxychloroquine is primarily used to treat or prevent malaria that is caused by mosquito bites. It is not effective against chloroquine-resistant malaria strains. It can also be used in conjunction with other prescription medications to treat a variety of autoimmune diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis or lupus. Plaquenil is kind of like the "standard" first-treatment used by many Rheumatologists, for both Sjogren's and Lupus, along with various eye and mouth wetting agents. It is fortunate that this medicine exists for us, even though no one knows exactly what is does in the body, how it works, or really even what to expect, if anything, when.
