    How to taper hydroxychloroquine

I did stop it for 2 weeks early in the treatment due to having to take a coupld other drugs that seemed to give me side effects. I just quit the plaquenil to give my liver a rest at that time. Plaquenil isn a antiparasitic drug with anti-inflammatory affect.

Aug 22, 2008 As you may already know, it is the most commonly prescribed drug to control inflammation. I have to say that it does work. Since February, I have gone from a maintenance dose of 10mg per day to 2.5mg every other day. My doctor finally agreed with me to start tapering me off the drug. This is my second bout at tapering. Jan 27, 2010 If you taper off the flare may come anyway but maybe it would be slower and more mild. Did the doc mention going on another drug if you find that you need it. The DMARDS family of drugs contains methotrexate, imuran, cellcept, etc and many of these drugs are given to people with sjogrens to slow the autoimmune attack ono the body. Hydroxychloroquine is taken in tablet form, with or after food. Your doctor will advise you about the correct dose. Usually you will start on a full dose of 200–400 mg daily, and later your doctor may reduce this. When your condition is very well controlled you may be advised to take hydroxychloroquine only 2–3 times per week.

Over the years on this site we have had quite a few people post that they didn't think that the plaquenil was working so they would stop taking it. I have done a lot of research on this drug and haven't run into anybody who has complained of the withdrawal effect.

  6. Occasionally, tapering on an every-other-day basis may be useful. For example, instead of tapering from 4 milligrams to 3 milligrams of prednisone, a doctor may prescribe taking 4 milligrams one day and 3 milligrams the next day, and alternating back and forth for one week also known as an alternate-day taper.

With the Plaquenil I don't think you will find much relief in such a short time on it & at half of a workable dose. I have read about people stopping P & flaring up. Those who stopped it abruptly had real problems similar to what you are experiencing. If you really need to get off it, I would taper down slowly, very slowly. Although its precise mechanism of action is unknown, hydroxychloroquine may suppress immune function by interfering with the processing and presentation of antigens and the production of cytokines. This agent is highly active against the erythrocytic forms of P. vivax and malariae and most strains of P. falciparum but not the gametocytes of P. falciparum.
